UNDERSTAND YOUR CUSTOMERS TO CREATE BETTER WEBSITES AND FUNNELS - IN 1 DAY
Attention small businesses and website designers
Now you can use the same research methods that Google and Facebook do to optimize your website’s usability, copy, design, and overall offer for less guesswork, happier customers, and improved conversion.
What is a Customer Listening Lab?
It’s a day of observing and listening to real customers while they use your website, sales page, funnel, or just a mockup, to evaluate usability, copy, design, and overall offer.
It’s a type of user experience (UX) research and the best way to truly understand your customers and provide what they need and want.
Why haven’t you heard of this?
Large companies behind the websites and applications you use every day (Facebook, Canva, Apple, CNN, etc.) have actually been doing this kind of research for years.
It just hasn’t been on the radar of most small businesses and website designers.
What will you learn?
Offer
Find out if customers understand your offer and what questions they still have. What are their real problems and do they think the offer will help solve them?
Copy
Discover any copy that may be confusing or information that might be missing. Learn your customer’s language so you can speak to them more effectively.
Design
Get customers’ impressions of the brand, graphics, layout, and flow so you can make sure it supports the intended message.
Usability
How easy is the site/page to use? Can customers figure out what they need to do? Is anything preventing them from accomplishing their goals or converting?
“I had the tremendous privilege to work with Alexis on multiple research engagements at Facebook. I feel especially grateful for our partnership, through osmosis and Alexis’ example, I was able to learn so much about best practices for research planning, processes, methods, and reporting. With each project, I was so impressed by the depth and breadth of insights she turned around so quickly and efficiently. Her research insights continue to help our team to this day! Overall, Alexis is extremely organized, goal-oriented, collaborative, and thoughtful, and anyone who gets to work with her is very lucky. :) ”

Hi, I’m Alexis morris
I’ve been a user experience (UX) researcher and designer for 20 years. Most of my work has been for large companies including Google, Facebook, Toyota, Verizon, Cisco, etc. and tech startups.
My goal is to make UX research more accessible to small businesses, designers, and solopreneurs so they can harness the power of user-centered design. I noticed so many of them guessing about what to create, wondering what customers think, and spending so much time on trial and error.
I created this Customer Listening Lab process to provide valuable information quickly so businesses and website designers can get to their best work faster and with greater success.
important details
Customer Listenings Labs are for smaller companies with straightforward services and customers. The process is designed specifically to evaluate websites and systems that are simpler than the complex applications and large teams typical of the processes needed by large companies. Customers should also have relatively simple characteristics to be able to recruit quickly and affordably. Therefore, not every company is right for this service. If you are a new client, I recommend booking a Discovery Call to ensure this service is a good fit. I reserve the right to accept or deny any projects.
Customer Listening Labs also work best when the client is available at least the first half of the day to actually observe research sessions and participate in debriefs. If this is not possible, recordings are provided. Please keep this in mind when requesting your day.
FAQ’s
-
Up to four screens of a website, sales page, prototype, wireframe, mockups, funnel, almost anything! In fact, it’s a best practice to evaluate early in the design process before too much time is spent on things like development and advertising.
-
Three to five customers are interviewed for 30 minutes each. I recruit five customers with the hope of at least three showing up and providing helpful feedback.
-
This depends on the business, website, and customer characteristics we want. If you have an email list, that may be the best way to recruit. Or, I have access to recruiting services.
-
The method I use is an interview which provides rich, qualitative data and insights in realtime. A survey is more of a quantitative research method where you throw out questions and people throw back answers. Surveys give some good information, but it often doesn’t give you the “why” behind the responses. Combining both methods is great too.
-
Design and usability experts are great, but no replacement for real user/customer feedback. It’s simply impossible to replicate it.
